Hepatitis:
Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver, most commonly caused by a viral infection.
Hepatitis viruses can cause inflammation of the liver, chronic viral hepatitis infection can lead to cirrhosis and liver cancer.
There are 5 types of hepatitis - A, B, C, D, and E - each caused by a different hepatitis virus.
Hepatitis A and E are typically caused by ingestion of contaminated food or water. Hepatitis B, C and D usually occur as a result of parenteral contact with infected body fluids.

Common modes of transmission for these viruses include receipt of contaminated blood or blood products, invasive medical procedures using contaminated equipment and for hepatitis B transmission from mother to baby at birth, from family member to child, and also by sexual contact.

World Hepatitis Day is July 28th
World Hepatitis Day is recognized annually on July 28th, the birthday of Dr. Baruch Blumberg (1925-2011). Dr. Blumberg discovered the hepatitis B virus in 1967 and two years later developed the first hepatitis B vaccine and for these achievements won the Nobel Prize.
World Hepatitis Day to raise awareness of the problems and what needs to be done to strengthen efforts in prevention, screening and control of viral hepatitis.
